MEet tom

Born and raised in Penrith, Tom Patchell is a qualified Concreter with a Cert 3 in Concrete Construction. Tom went to St. Dominic’s College and then upon graduating in 2014, started working before travelling to live briefly in Ireland. Tom has a beautiful baby daughter and spends most of his spare time with her and his lovely partner. Tom’s an avid rugby league (Panthers supporter!) and cricket fan, and enjoys going for runs. Concrete is Tom’s passion and he loves seeing his clients reaction when revealing a completed project.

What is the best type of concrete driveway finish?

A textured finish such as broom or cove will provide grip for vehicles and provide a slip resistance surface. Durability is a big factor and these finishes will be long lasting. Cove and broom are also aesthetically please and will provide a stunning, cosmetic finish.

What are the different types of concrete finishes?

Broom, cove, trowel finish are the most popular and provide all round good qualty finishes. Other avenues include exposed aggegate and polished concrete, these finishes provide a professional cosmetic finish to any space.

How long does a concrete driveway take?

This depends on the size and complexity of the project. Residential driveways could take anywhere from two days to a week of work and then curing time.

Why can't you pour concrete in the rain?

Pouring concrete in the rain can compromise its strengh, also increasing the tendency for dusting and scaling on the surface. A nice finish is very difficult to manage in the rain and once the damage is done, it is very hard to rectify.

What colour concrete should I choose?

Colouring your concrete can increase the aesthetic value of your property. It is important to regard the colours of the existing house a find a colour that will suit the property.

How will I know my concrete will be strong?

Slab thickness, steel reinforcment and high strength concrete is imperative for slab strength. E.g Driveway - at least 100mm thick slab, SL82 steel mesh throughout slab and minimum 25mpa concrete.

How long does concrete take to cure/dry?

Concrete typically takes about 28 days to reach its full strength. However there are milestones along the way, 24-48 hours the concrete should be strong enough for foot traffic and 7 days waiting time is recommended for vehicles.
